Abstract

Introduction: Femoral neck fractures are among the most common injuries in elderly patients. The treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients is still controversial. Hemiarthroplasty is one of the most common treatment methods and is associated with better functional outcome and fewer reoperations than internal fixation. A large number of prostheses have been used, and no definite conclusions have been made regarding which type of arthroplasty is preferred. Aim of study: The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of the surgery in patients randomized to either a unipolar or bipolar HA regarding perioperative and postoperative complications and then comparing the hip function after both arthroplasty operations.Materials and methods: This prospective case-control study involved 30 patients (15 in each group) aged more than 70 years who underwent bipolar and unipolar hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fracture. Patients presented to the emergency department of Cairo University Hospitals between the periods of July 2017 till March 2018. All patients were followed prospectively for a minimum of 6 months (mean follow up 9 months)
