Abstract
Background:Thymectomy may benefit patients with myasthenia gravis that can be performed through several different approaches, including transcervical, transsternal (TS), subxyphoid, thoracotomy, and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), robotic assisted thoracic surgery (RATS). Patients and method:This was a Prospective non-randomized controlled trial of sixty patients with myasthenia gravis who underwent thymectomy at Cairo University Hospitals.patients were classified into two groups: group A: thirty patients underwent VATS thymectomy, group B: thirty patients underwent TS thymectomy. Preoperative, operative and postoperative data were collected and analyzed to compare between the results of the two techniques. Results:VATS thymectomy proved in our study that it has superior results in terms of postoperative pain, reduced need for postoperative analgesics, hospital stay, less restrictions to activities, improved cosmesis and postoperative complications at the expense of a longer operative time as TS approach showed significant shorter time than VATS technique
