Abstract

Introduction: Clinically significant bleeding (CSB) is a danger for critically ill patients in the PICU. Acquired thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy are common factors that may lead to life threatening bleeding in the pediatric intensive care units. Objective: This prospective study aimed to find out the causes of acquired thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy and examine any association of low platelet count, coagulopathy with bleeding risk in PICU patients. Subjects and methods: This study was conducted at PICU at Cairo University Children{u2019}s Hospital. The medical records of PICU patients were reviewed, all patients who developed acquired thrombocytopenia or had impairment in coagulation functions detected through their laboratory investigations during their stay in the ICU during 6 months period from April 2018 to September 2018 were included and monitored to detect occurrence of CSB according to the criteria of the study
