Abstract

Background: during the child’s stay in ICU, child may be exposed to both hypoglycemia, Hyperglycemia and glucose variability. Glucose being an important substrate for energy; maintenance of its blood levels is of critical importance and the aim of this study is to detect disturbance in its levels and their association with morbidity and mortality in critically illchildren. Patients and Methods: this study was designed as a prospective observational study on 120 patient in ICU. Every patient underwent full history, examination and serial blood glucose measurements Results: this study showed that hypoglycemia, Hyperglycemia and glucose variability are prevalent in critically ill children and associated with increased length of PICU stay, need for inotropic support and mortality rate. Conclusion: hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are prevalent in critically ill children and associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality
