Abstract

This study concerned on design prototype of water purification plant using novel, cheap and effective materials and nano-materials that characterized by their affinities for microbial and organic matters. Silver nanoparticles were impregnated on modified activated carbon (AC) by acids for achieving disinfection of water in the three column of prototype for water purification. Silver nanoparticles were antimicrobial agent (Ag-NPs) and were prepared by using sucrose as reducing and capping agent. It was produced in small size (33 nm Mean size) and showed highest efficiency on bacteria cells. Escherichia coli (ATTC 25922) was used as a model organism in flow-column (continuous-mode) operations. Continuous results using AgNPs/AC of cell suspension showed that, 106 CFU/ml of cells were killed within 30 min contact time with different flow rates (80, 110 and 130 min/ml), three columns packed with AgNPs-AC (all having a height of 25 cm with diameters of 2.5cm) were used for cell-killing performance over a long period of time. Inlet water having 106 CFU/ml E. coli could be completely disinfected to produce treated, outlet water having zero cell count. The characterization of silver nanoparticles and activated carbon was studied by particle size analyzer, UV spectrophotometer; modified AC/AgNPs was studied by contact angle, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, and SEM techniques
