Abstract

The most challenging problems in the field of environmental chemistry is treatment of the effluents, containing the expired and unused antibiotic drugs such as sulfadiazine (SZ) and sulfacetamide (SA), so it is an essential to determine the concentration of Sulfonamides by a rapid and accurate method and then find a suitable method to degrade the assayed products into harmless chemicals. The color of the charge transfer (CT) complexes, developed from the reaction of SZ and SA with 2, 3-Dichloro-5, 6-dicyano-1, 4- benzoquinone (DDQ), chloranilic acid (CHL) and picric acid (PA), was used to determine the concentration of SZ and SA at 528, 510 and 410 nm, respectively. The lambert-beer{u2019}s law of SZ and SA are obeyed in the concentration ranges of (6.80 68.0, 13.6 136 and 6.80 27.2) and (11.8 94.4, 11.8 118 and 8.26 35.43) ægmL⁻¹ for DDQ, CHL and PA complexes, respectively. The nature of the observed transitions was investigated by time-dependent density functional theory. The photodegradation of SZ{u2192}DDQ and SA{u2192}DDQ CT complexes in presence of sodium nitrite at 256 nm resulted in faster degradation of SZ and SA compared with other used acceptors; CHL and PA. The effect of other additives such as oxalic acid, hematite nanoparticles and/ or illumination source was studied
