Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic disease affecting children. Asthma symptoms can be controlled with effective asthma management for better quality of life. This involves taking the medications as described; the allergist will prescribe the best medications for each condition and provide patients with specific instructions for using them. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the proper inhalation technique (usage and cleaning) of a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) with spacer in asthmatic children, identify the factors affecting improper technique and the effect of inhalation technique on asthma control. Patients and methods: The study was carried out on 200 asthmatic children aged (2 to12 years) following up in the allergy clinic of pediatric specialized hospital Cairo University, and using MDI with spacer devices for at least 3 months, data was collected during regular follow up visits after written informed consent obtained from the patient{u2019}s carers. Results: Only 82 patients (41%) can perform all essential steps correctly and the most missed step was not taking at least 5 to 6 breath for each actuation. Only 18 patients (9%) were following the correct technique of cleaning, the most wrong step was frequency of cleaning the device. Conclusion: There was no statistical significant relation between the proper inhalation technique and asthma control. There was statistical significant relation between giving drug under supervision of carers or duration of starting inhaler usage, instruction times, who gives these instructions and the correct inhalation technique
