Abstract

Lantana camara L. is an ornamental flowering shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions. It is considered one of the most noxiuous weed in the world. It has many beneficial uses in traditional medicine, in addition several evidence based bioactivities were reported. In order to identify the variety aculeata of the investigated plant, both macromorphorological characteristics and genetic profiling using ISSR primmers were recorded. The phytochemical analysis of the examined plant included the chromatographic screening of the different fractions of leaves, roots and flowers. It revealed the presence of different phytochemical classes as flavonoids, triterpenes, sterols and phenolic acids. The investigation of the essential oil of the fruits revealed the presence of thirteen terpenoid compounds mostly of hydrocarbon type. The LC/MS analysis of the flowers revealed the identification of 172 compounds belonging to different classes namely, flavonoids, phenylethanoid glycosides, iridoid glycosides, phenolic acids, non phenolic acids and fatty acids. No hepatotoxic triterpenes were detected in flower extract. The evaluation of the antiurolithiatic activity of the ethanolic extract of flowers, roots and leaves revealed comparable activity of the three examined organs, which may be attributed to the similarity in their chemical composition. The evaluation of anticoagulant activity of the flowers, roots and leaves showed significant increase in prothrombin time in flowers and roots extract while the leaves extract did not show any significant difference
