Abstract

Dental Bio-materials used in oral restorations as removable partial denture can affect the balance of oral flora. The extensive plaque formation on denture base may contribute to caries or periodontal inflammation. Therefore, it is important to know how different types of dental biomaterials used in denture base construction may prevent or promote the accumulation of microorganisms. A successful removable partial denture must have the ability to prevent the adhesion of microorganisms on its surface. This study aimed to compare the adhesion of micro-organisms to the fitting surface of BIO-HPP, (Co{u2013}Cr) metallic removable partial denture (RPD) bases, and mucosa beneath them using the same environmental condition in patient class III mod 1 Kennedy classification. Fourteen partially edentulous patients, having lower bilateral posterior bounded saddles and a RPD constructed from two bounded base saddles, one from BIO-HPP and the other from cobalt{u2013}chromium (Co{u2013}Cr) metal were selected. The fitting surfaces of the denture bases and mucosa beneath them were swabbed before and after insertion at 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months follow-up periods. Microbial adhesion was determined by counting the colony forming units (CFU) of the micro-organisms in the collected specimens. The mucosa under the BIO-HPP denture base retained more micro-organisms than the mucosa under the metallic denture base, the Co-Cr denture base retain more microorganisms than the BIO-HPP denture base and the colonization of micro-organisms increased by time on mucosa and on a denture base made either by metal or BIO-HPP. The study recommended the use of BIO-HPP as denture base in short span bounded saddle in patients highly susceptible to infection
