Abstract

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common female health condition involving anovulation, hyperandrogenism and the presence of polycystic ovarian morphology. Although several studies demonstrate that women with PCOS have an increased prevalence of depression, anxiety and other psychiatric disorders, studies exploring suicide ideations and behavior in PCOS are quite lacking. Aim: To study suicidality, depression, and impulsivity in females with primary infertility due to PCOS compared to females with primary infertility due to causes other than ovarian and to clarify the relation of depression, impulsivity and hormonal levels to suicidality in PCOS patients. Method: Sixty primary infertile females (thirty due to PCOS and thirty due to causes other than ovarian factors as matched controls) were recruited from the infertility clinic, Kasr Al Ainy Hospital, Cairo University over a period of 6 months. Patients with PCOS were diagnosed by Rotterdam criteria. All subjects were assessed clinically and depression was diagnosed using SCID. Columbia suicide severity rating scale, the Arabic short UPPS-P impulsivity scale, Beck depression inventory and the general health questionnaire were used to assess psychopathology. Hormonal levels (LH,FSH, E2, TSH, PRL) were obtained from patients’ files
