Abstract

Background: Maintaining the endotracheal tube cuff pressure within an optimal range is challenging. The pressure can be altered by many factors and might endanger patient’s life. Aim of the study: To assess factors that influence endotracheal tube cuff pressure measurement among mechanically ventilated patients. Research design: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized. Research questions: What are factors that might affect the endotracheal tube cuff pressure measurement? What are noninvasive complications that might develop due to over and under inflation of endotracheal tube cuff pressure? Setting: This study was carried out at selected critical care units at one of the university hospitals in Cairo. Sample: A purposive sample conisisting of 100 ceitically ill adult patients connected to mechanical ventilators. Tools of data collection: Three tools were utilized to collect data pertinent to the current study. Personnel characteristics and medical data sheet; factors influencing endotracheal tube cuff pressure measurement assessment sheet; and endotracheal tube cuff pressure complications assessment sheet
