Abstract

MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a highly resistant opportunistic pathogen that causes serious infections in immunocompromised patients with burn injuries due to resistance to different antibiotics. Combination therapy of phage and antibiotics is the suggested way to increase treatment efficacy of MDR infections, which is due to the differences in their mechanisms of action preventing the resistant mutants emerge. In the present study, eight virulent phages were isolated from sewage and clinical specimens and characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The lytic efficacy of P aeruginosa phages was studied in vitro as a cocktail monotherapy and in combination with amikacin. The in vivo efficacy of phage cocktail and amikacin administered either as monotherapy or in combination therapy was evaluated in acute and chronic MDR P aeruginosa infection of burned mouse model.
