Abstract Abstract Cosmetic products are contaminated with several microorganisms due to several reasons that may be a contaminated water, during manufacturing processes, during packaging, during the wrong use, or the inefficiency of used preservatives, so it is considered one of the problems that cause health risks if it contains pathogenic bacteria, especially multi-drug resistant antibiotics. Therefore, the current study aims to use natural preservatives such as cyanobacteria extracts (Spirulina), which are characterized by their antibacterial effects against pathogenic bacteria as an alternative natural agent to harmful chemical preservatives. This study aimed to investigate antimicrobial activity of Spirulina platensis extracts against multi-drug pathogenic bacteria that isolated from cosmetic products. The study began by examining 87 samples of different cosmetic products. Results indicated that all collected cosmetic samples were contaminated with varying degree of total bacteria and fungi. Of the 87 samples, 26.4 % were contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. The ability of pathogenic isolates to produce protease, rhamnolipid and blood hemolysis were estimated. Only 18 (32.14%) bacterial isolates were found to possess the three virulence factors. Four isolates were selected for identification which were considered more resistant against most tested antibiotics. According to their morphological and genetically properties identified as Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus sciuri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The dried Spirulina platensis powder of two strains was separately extracted by water and different organic solvents. Data revealed that methanol and hexane extract of S. platensis (S2) were highly active against B. cereus, Staph. sciu |
