Abstract

In this chapter a review of some background material is presented. We start with a brief review of the theory of linear elasticity. Next there is a review of thermodynamics including the statement of the first and second laws. The basic definitions are given and the main equations are derived. After that we start with the subject of thermoelasticity for ordinary materials like metals. We give a derivation of the equations of uncoupled coupled and generalized thermo-elasticity theories, respectively. Next, we present a review of the theory of thermoelasticity for micropolar materials. At the end, we present the numerical method used to convert the Laplace transforms used in the third chapter. We consider a continuous medium contained within a volume V and bounded by closed surfaces. It is subject to a body force Fi per unit mass and surface tractions pi per unit area which depend on the orientation of the unit outward normal to the surface n as well as on the location r of the surface element [1], [2]. In what follows we shall use the tensor notations. Repeated indices indicate summation over the range of values 1, 2 and 3 of the repeated index. Commas denote material derivatives as usual.
