Abstract

Leadership is considered one of the four vital managerial functions which motivates people to work individually or in a group to achieve organizational goals. It takes many forms, some of these have positive effects while others have negative ones. One type of these harmful practices is toxic leadership. This study aims at investigating the impact of toxic leadership and its dimensions (abusive supervision, self -promotion, unpredictability, narcissism, and authoritarian leadership) on employees’ silence applied on educational sector. Data of the research were collected through a questionnaire from 305 middle managers worked in 38 educational administrations in three Egyptian governorates Kafr Elsheikh, Alexandria and EL Beheira.
The researcher used confirmatory factor analysis and structural equational modeling to measure the accuracy of data and test the hypotheses of the study. Results of statistical analysis (AMOS 24) revealed that toxic leadership has a significant and positive impact on employees’ silence, abusive supervision as a dimension of toxic leadership has a significant and positive impact on employees’ silence, narcissism as a dimension of toxic leadership has a significant and positive impact on employees’ silence, authoritarian leadership as a dimension of toxic leadership has a significant and positive impact on employees’ silence, and unpredictability as a dimension of toxic leadership has a significant but negative impact on employees’ silence. Whereas self-promotion as a dimension of toxic leadership has non-significant impact on employees’ silence. Results also concluded that narcissism is the most influential dimension on middle managers’ silence in educational administrations followed by abusive supervision then unpredictability and then authoritarian leadership.
