Abstract

Like all other human behaviors, creativity must be examined by considering both personal and situational influences. Values alignment provides a suitable theoretical perspective to investigate the congruence between persons and organizations in the domain of creativity. However, few studies have examined the effects of values on creative behavior. Although the majority of these studies have identified a positive relationship between values alignment and creativity, it is suggested that congruent individuals are less likely to be creative. The current study examined the relationship between values alignment and employees creativity for the university academic staff.
One of the best ways in which organizations can capture their employees’ creativity is by creating a climate that nurtures creativity. Having a creative working climate nourishes and creates a suitable working culture that enhances the creative spark of the employees. Based on this premise, the study focus on the creative climate attributes such as freedom and autonomy, goal clarity, management practices, information sharing among co-workers, non-controlling supervision, participative safety, resources, diverse perspectives, pioneering and venturous attitude, as well as the overall organizational systems and processes and how it can be related to values alignment of the members of the academic staff in the Egyptian universities.
A sample of 240 respondents of academic staff(teacher, assistant professor, and professor) were taken and for achieving the study objectives and its hypotheses testing, a questionnaire was developed, which are designed for this purpose, then the data obtained were analyzed using suitable statistical methods.
Research results show the most dominant values systems are: self-enhancement and self- transcendence which determined competing values according to the circular construction of values.
Self-enhancement is characterized by power and achievement, as well as partly by hedonism, and emphasizes the pursuit of one’s interests and relative success and dominance over others. In contrast, self-transcendence is characterized by universalism and benevolence and emphasizes concern for the welfare and interests of others. Hedonism shares elements of both openness to change and self-enhancement.
And that shows differences among faculty members in values priorities, and it is proof of the acceptance of the university environment of multiple systems and personal values that are lived together in one place, the main source of these differences is age, as age correlates positively with self-transcendence values (benevolence, universalism) and negatively with self-enhancement values (power, achievement).
Some of the research managerial recommendations to create favorable conditions for creativity are : establishing a relaxed, non-judgmental atmosphere, frame activities by creating constraints, encourage employees to discuss their work together in a frank but friendly manner, formulate a serious but playful atmosphere, foster people’s self-confidence to bear the risk of unusual behavior, create the balance between divergent and convergent thinking, never underestimate your employees, and concentrate in the importance of the role model.
