Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a multi-factorial disease in which environmental factors interact with genetic variants to predispose the disease. KCNJ11 E23K variant leads to over activity of the KATP channel resulting in reduced insulin secretion The aim of this study was to investigate the association of KCNJ11 E23k variant with the type 2 diabetes mellitus among Egyptian patients. Subject and Methods: This case-control study included 80 T2DM patients and 82 controls all unrelated. KCNJ11 E23K variant analysis was done using Polymerase Chain Reaction followed by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism - (PCR - RFLP). Results: The study showed that subjects carrying CT or TT genotypes are susceptible to type 2 diabetes mellitus (p = 0.003) (O.R. = 2.622 at 95% C.I = 1.388-4.951), and the T allele was significantly associated with susceptibility to T2DM (p = 0.006) (O.R. = 1.896 at 95% C.I = 1.193- 3.012). Conclusion: This study suggests that KCNJ11 E23K variant is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus
