Abstract

The electrochemical treatment methods, used in wastewater treatment associated with the production of natural gas in the oil sector, namely {u2018}produced water{u2019}. Produced water is the largest wastewater stream generated in the oil and gas industries. It is a mixture of several organic and inorganic compounds. Anodic oxidation has been considered as suitable means for removal of dissolved organic matter, and total dissolved solids. Experiments were investigated by using a bench-scale electrochemical cell with diameter 20 cm and height 30 cm, incorporating flow-by porous graphite electrodes at steady state case. Effect of flow rate on COD removal efficiency, energy consumption and space time yield was investigated. In addition effect of current density on COD removal efficiency, Total current efficiency, TDS removal efficiency and cell potential was studied. The experimental results proved that the maximum removal efficiency, and total current efficiency were obtained at flow rate 50 ml/min, for initial COD concentration 2485mg/l, with current density 1.41 mA/cm2,and at pH 6.9. The removal efficiency was 66.52%, and total current efficiency reached to 69.22%, with a residual COD concentration 832 mg/l, and energy consumption 2.12 kWh/kg COD
