Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is common in patients with chronic hepatitis C. It affects the treatment response and disease outcome. Therefore, Nurses have an important role in assessing nutritional status of patients during treatment with combination therapy. Aim: to assess the nutritional status of patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with combination therapy also, to develop suggested guidelines. Research design: A descriptive exploratory study. Sample: A convenience sample of 102 patients between 30 to {u2264} 60 years who are treated with Sofosbuvir combined with Daclatasvir. Setting: Sovaldi clinics at the National Hepatology and Tropical Medicine Research Institute from January to June 2016. Methodology: Patients were assessed three times; before starting the combination therapy, one month after and during third month using the following tools; demographic data, medical related data and the 7-point Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) scale. Results: 56.9% of the study sample were females and 54.9% were residing in rural regions. There were statistically significant differences of means BMI and overall score of SGA throughout the three times of assessment. According to SGA study participants lying in category A were 83.3%, 63.7% and 75.5% in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd assessment respectively, and the rest were lying in category B. Conclusion: It is imperative for nurses to assess the nutritional status of patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with Sofosbuvir and Daclatasvir especially during the first month of starting the combination therapy for better clinical outcome
