Abstract

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Most cases are secondary to either a viral hepatitis infection (hepatitis B or C) or cirrhosis. Objective: This study aims at recording the surgical management of HCC cases at National cancer institute (NCI), Cairo university in years. Patients and methods: All patients who underwent surgical resection of their HCCs at NCI, Cairo university in the period from 01/01/2006 to 31/12/2010. Ninety eight cases was retrieved from which only 32 files were found and included in the study. Results: Twenty seven patients were males, the most common presentation was abdominal pain (16 cases), AFP was elevated in 4 ₁ses, non-anatomical resection was performed in 14 cases. Conclusion: in 5 years, about 3500 patients with HCC presented to NCI from which only 98 patients underwent surgical resection, most of them were males with average age of 56.81 in the form of non-anatomical resection 43.7%
