Abstract
Introduction: Opiates are considered to be among the most addictive illicit drugs. Research into the genetics of opiate dependence has focused on the opioidergic system, which is the primary target for opiates. The OPRM1 gene encodes the o opioid receptor. The rs6912029 [G-172T] Single nucleotide polymorphism is located on chromosome 6 in the Upstream (5`-UTR) region of OPRM1 gene. Various studies have provided varied and conflicting results for the association between opioid receptor gene 1 polymorphism and opiate dependence. Objectives: The study aimed to compare the presence or absence of polymorphism in Mu opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) in patients with opiate dependence and healthy controls and detect the relation between some clinical variables in patients with opiate dependence and the presence of polymorphic Mu opioid receptor gene (OPRM1). Methods: This is a comparative cross sectional study. A sample of 40 opiate dependent patients selected consecutively from the addiction out- patient clinic, Cairo university (Kasr Elaini) psychiatry and addiction treatment Hospital and a sample of 40 healthy controls selected by visiting the ophthalmology, ENT and dermatology outpatient clinics in the same hospital who were matched for age, sex, education and culture were interviewed using a semi structured clinical interview
