Abstract

Central auditory processing disorder and specific language impairment are both developmental communication disorders. Central auditory processing disorders has been receiving a growing amount of attention because of the possible link between auditory processing disorders and learning disabilities in general, and specific language impairment in particular. To date, there is limited research directly investigating the overlap in symptoms observed among children with central auditory processing disorder and children with specific language impairment. Objective: The aim of this study is to compare language assessment scores and scores of some auditory processing skills in a group of Egyptian Arabic speaking children having specific language impairment in order to reach a better understanding of the correlation between their central auditory processing disorder and language profiles.Subjects and methods: This study was conducted on 60 Arabic speaking Egyptian children. Their age ranged from 5 years to 8 years. Children were divided into two groups; study group, with specific language impairment and control group, with normal language development. All children were subjected to a multi-disciplinary battery of assessments. The battery combined language assessment, cognitive assessment, working memory testing, series of auditory processing tasks including dichotic digit test, monaural low redundancy speech test, non-speech temporal resolution test and finally a parent rated questionnaire
