Full term placental changes in obese women

Abstract
Sixty placentae were divided into two equal groups. group A (control group) was taken from healthy mothers with normal weight pregnancy. group B was taken from obese women.Gross, morphometric and histological examination was performed to the placentae and the collected data were subjected to statistical analysis. Gross examination showed a significant increase in the placental weight and thickness and surface area in comparison to the normal weight pregnancy. Placental shape and cord insertion showed no statistical significance in the two groups. Light microscopic examination revealed villous edema, excess syncytial knot formation, great maternal inflammatory lesions and fibrinoid deposition, also immune inflammatory response showed high values especially CD68 all showed statistical difference in comparison with normal weight pregnancy. The study concluded that obesity resulted in gross, morphometric, morphological and histological changes in the human placenta
