Abstract

Diabetes is highly prevalent in Egypt and is responsible for 2.4% of all years of life lost (YLL). Similarly, diabetes is the sixth most important cause of disability burden in Egypt. Patients with limited resources seen in public clinics often face cultural, language, and literacy barriers to self-management, making peer support particularly appealing. Primary care clinicians cannot meet every need of their patients with chronic conditions. Half of patients leave primary care visits not understanding what their doctor told them. Though shared decision-making is associated with improved outcomes, only 9% of patients participate in decisions. Average adherence rates for prescribed medications are about 50%, and for lifestyle changes they are below 10%. Health coaching is one way to accomplish this function, they work towards improving health, quality of life and confidence to make changes to lifestyle to minimise risk of developing complications.
