Abstract

The persisting fever is a puzzle in the general medicine. The defnition of feverof unknown origin (FUO) includes three criteria: fever higher than 38.30C on several occasions, duration of illness more than three weeks, and if thediagnosis is uncertain afer one week of investigations in hospital. More than 200 diseases are the causes of FUO.Of the many publications concerned with the etiology ofFUO, most have dealt with the classic FUO rather than the othersubclasses listed previously. Almost all causes belong toone of four general categories of disease: infections;inflammatory or connective tissue disorders, neoplasms and the undetermined conditions..Infection due to the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is highly prevalent among humans throughout the world. Humans are inadvertently infected with T. gondii by ingestion of food or water contaminated with cat feces containing oocysts, ingestion of tissue cysts in undercooked meat, transplacental infection of the fetus, white blood cell (WBC) transfusion, or organ transplantation
