Abstract ABSTRACT The present study investigated the role of some nanoparticles such as magnetite (Fe3O4 NPs) and cerium oxide (CeO2 NPs) on dairy effluent nitrate and phosphate biodegradation using different inoculum sources. Two inoculum sources (wastewater and sludge) were obtained from the dairy wastewater treatment plant unit - Altayeb factory for dairy industry at Jumasa, Egypt, the samples were stored at 4 °C to maintain its inoculum properties. The study was performed at Environmental Sciences Department, Faculty of Science, Port-Said University. The biodegradation of nitrate and phosphate effluent using CeO2 NPs and Fe3O4 NPs with different concentrations were checked. The used culture media is composed of (d-glucose anhydrate, 2.5 g/L; MgSO4•7H2O, 0.5 g/L and KNO3, 0.18 g/L; dissolved in one liter distilled water) supplemented with different concentrations of the nanoparticles separately. Fe3O4 NPs with concentration (40 ppm) was the optimum for inoculum growth enhancement and the nitrate and phosphate degradation using different inoculum sources. In addition the optimal concentration of CeO2 NPs with concentration (sludge as inoculum 1 × 10−10 ppm and wastewater as inoculum 1 × 10−12 ppm) were the optimum for inoculum growth enhancement as well as the degradation of nitrate and phosphate. The current study confirmed the role of nanoparticles on enhancing the degradation of dairy wastewater nitrate and phosphate, using two different inoculum sources (wastewater and activated sludge). For magnetite (Fe3O4 NPs), the degradation of nitrate and phosphate using sludge as an inoculum source was improved up to 48.54% and 46.13%, respectively compared to control, while the nitrate and phosphate degradation using wastewater as an inoculum source was improved up to 64.12% and 36.85%, respectively compared to control. For cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs), the degradation of nitrate and phosphate using sludge as inoculum source was improved up to 89.01% and 68.12% respectively compared to control, while the nitrate and phosphate degradation using wastewater as an inoculum source was improved up to 83.30% and 87.75% respectively compared to control. The study recommended the use of both CeO2 and Fe3O4 NPs in the treatment of nutrients in domestic wastewater and industrial effluents. |
