Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess whether postoperative periapical healing of apical periodontitis & postoperative pain differ in patients with controlled diabetes type 2 compared to diabetes-free patients after receiving one- visit root canal treatment.Patient and Methods A total of 46 necrotic permanent teeth with periapical radiolucencies were collected from 36 patients and divided into 2 groups (23 as a control group and 23 as a diabetic group). All teeth were accessed and prepared using Protaper rotary system, irrigated using NaOCL then EDTA and distalled water. Finally they were obturated using lateral condensation technique. Glass ionomer restoration was placed as a final restoration. All procedures were done in a single visit. All demographic data, clinical and radiographic findings and VAS (numerical rating scale) scores (preoperatively, 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours and 168 hours postoperative) obtained from the patients were statistically analyzed using Chi- square t-test and Mann-Witney test. The patients were recalled after 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months for clinical and radiographic follow up. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the control and the diabetic groups regarding demographic data except for the mean of age which was significantly higher in the diabetic group. No significant difference was found between the two groups regarding preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative factors except for preoperative swelling which was exhibited more in 90 the diabetic group as well as duration of session which was significantly higher in the control group. No statistically significant difference was found between both groups in postoperative pain at 24, 48 , 72 and 168 hours, while there was a significant difference at 12 hours with diabetic group showing higher number of patients reporting mild pain. Postoperative healing showed no difference between the two groups at different periods of follow up
