Abstract

Based on the hypothesis that pregnant adolescents would exhibit more psychiatric symptoms, specifically anxiety and depression, than pregnant adults, our aim was to study the difference between them regarding psychological factors: namely pregnancy adjustment, emotional reaction to conception, to pregnant appearance and to the baby, in addition to, possible psychiatric presentations whether in the form of symptoms or disorders and associated factors, in particular, her relationship with her husband and other relationships, as well as her interaction with the fetus. Two groups of pregnant females were recruited from the obstetric antenatal care outpatient clinic at Kasr Alaini university hospitals along 21 months. The first group consisted of pregnant adults (age > 25) (n = 90) and the second consisted of pregnant adolescents (age < 21) (n = 90). All participants were assessed using birmingham Interview for maternal mental health, structured clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I disorders, structured clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II disorders, state trait anxiety Inventory, beck depression inventory and intimate bond measure
