Abstract

Inflammatory breast diseases are frequently encountered clinical complaint, they range from benign to malignant forms, namely IBC which has a grave prognosis. It’s crucial to differentiate IBC from other types of mastitis because there are major differences in its prognosis and treatment. Ultrasound is one of the main diagnostic tools for discriminating benign and malignant mastitis. Signs such as ill-defined collections, mild skin thickening and non infiltrating lymph nodes are considered indicative of benign lesions. Absence of collections, extensive skin thickening and infiltrative lymph nodes are considered indicative of malignant lesions. Ultrasound also has a major role in short term follow up of simple mastitis cases and in guiding interventional procedures as: Ultrasound guided aspiration and core needle biopsy which are the mainstay in diagnosis and management of inflammatory breast diseases
