Abstract

The electric power consumption has continued to rise, so the need of transmission towers became vital its design and construction increased significantly. Safety of transmission lines is essential to decrease the disruption risk to power supply knowing that transmission towers installed decades ago still function although its design criteria evolved through the years. Factors that affect the safety of transmission towers are difficult to quantify such as errors in fabrication, joint detailing errors, erection errors and variation in properties of materials. Therefore design of latticed steel transmission towers became challenging as it involves modeling and detailing of significant amount of steel members and connections. Testing of designed towers validates consistency between modeling and detailing to ensure that the tower can withstand design loads without premature failure. Standard structural analysis models for transmission tower design assume a simple truss behavior where the connections are assumed to be pinned (hinged) which may compromise the structure behavior. In this study, 3D finite element analysis software (ANSYS) is used to model Toshky Owinat East 220 kv transmission tower. Different structural analysis modeling strategies are adopted considering tower main legs as truss or beam elements. Also different values of eccentricities in connections between diagonals and main legs intersection are investigated
