Abstract

Ovarian cancer is the third most common cancer of the female genital tract and the leading cause of cancer death associated with gynecologic tumors. Cell free DNA presents a novel biomarker for diagnostic and prognostic applications in patients with ovarian carcinoma. The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of cf-DNA as a non invasive biomarker for diagnosing malignant and benign ovarian tumor in a group of Egyptian patients. Fourty newly diagnosed ovarian cancer cases, ten benign ovarian cases and 30 healthy control females were recruited in this study. Cell free DNA was detected by TaqMan-real time PCR assay. The findings of the present work showed that cf-DNA at a cut-off 2446.3 GE/ml can be used to diagnose ovarian cancer among healthy control subjects with sensitivity 87.5%, specificity 89.7%, PPV 76.1%, NPV 83.9% and accuracy 87.1%. The median level of Cell free DNA PCR results in ovarian cancer patients was 6012 genome equivalents per milliliter (GE/ml) higher than that of benign ovarian cases was 2825 GE/ml and that of healthy controls was 1875 GE/ml. There was a statistically significant difference between the three groups p<0.001
