Abstract

In this dissertation, the design of a multivariable adaptive PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller for the control of the plasma current, shape and position to ensure the safe operation of a fusion reactor is successfully developed. The designing process starts with using a compensator in addition to PID gains update laws then the idea was transformed by alternatively use the RLS (recursive least square) algorithm as adaptation mechanism for tuning PID controller gains. Several simulations are made to investigate the proposed APID (adaptive PID) controller through different cases on SISO (single-Input single-output) systems. When the comparative results show the advantage of the APID controller, an extended development to MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) systems is made to be applied to more real systems. Comparative simulations on MIMO system demonstrate its superiority over other controller methods especially for unstable systems when the controlled systems suffer from parameter variations. Since stability is a vital issue in the evaluation of control systems, therefore stability analysis of the proposed approach is developed using Lyapunov stability theory
