Abstract

Back ground: Foot problems among diabetics represent one of the most painful, distressing, and disabling afflictions that associated with impairment in activities of daily living and if not managed properly, it can be complicated and ended with amputation. Early identification of foot problems and effective foot care are essential part of diabetes management that can avert many amputations. Aim of the study: Assess common foot problems and related self-care measures among diabetics. Design: A descriptive exploratory design was utilized in this study. Sample: A purposive sample of 150 adult patients diagnosed with type I or type II diabetes for at least six months ago attended the outpatient clinic of diabetes and endocrine glands affiliated to Cairo University hospital were recruited to the study. Tools: Three tools were used to collect data pertinent to the study namely; Subjects’ characteristics related data tool, Diabetes foot problems assessment questionnaire and Foot care questionnaire tool. Results: The main study results revealed that (93.3%) of the study subjects’ age ranged from 40 < 60 years old, (58%) were males, the most common problems for 93.3% of them are related to peripheral neuropathy and (64%) of them had poor foot care measures. Conclusion: all study sample had foot problems and the majority of them had poor foot care measures. Recommendation: Replication of the study on a larger probability sample selected from different geographical areas in Egypt is recommended to obtain more generalizable data
