Abstract In recent years, algal biodiesel has attracted much attention and investments. the cultivation technique using photobioreactor is mandatory for optimizing the biomass production and oil content. Despite the fact that the production of specific products needs high purity, cultivation and harvesting are the most inefficient and costly steps in the whole biodiesel production. Thus; an experimental program was organized to study the cultivation process in PBR and optimize some of the cultivation conditions. Four local strains are studied to select the most efficient strain. The selected strain is cultivated in photobioreactors with different sizes to optimize the illuminated surface to volume ratio. Three models described the algal growth are examined. Simultaneous optimization of irradiance and initial concentration is experimented. A prototype photobioreactor is designed depending. The added value of algae is increased by evaluating protein and carbohydrates content. Finally, a preliminary economic estimation is performed with ROI 8.7% |
