Abstract

Background: Nurses who are knowledgeable and competent in the basic aspects of port-a-cath care and maintenance are able to ensure specific child needs are met and optimal health outcomes achieved. However, nurses who work in oncology require a higher level of knowledge and skill to manage port-a-cath. Aim to assess nurses’ knowledge and practices related to the care of patients connected to port-a-cath. Research design: A descriptive exploratory design was utilized in the current study. Setting: The study was conducted at a children’s cancer hospital (57357) in Egypt. Subject: A sample of convenience of 100 male and female oncology nurses who cared for patients connected with port-a-cath. Tools: data were collected using a nurse’s background data, port-a cath knowledge questionnaire to assess nurse{u2019}s knowledge about port-a-cath, and practice checklist to assess nurses{u2019} practices regarding port-a-cath care. Results: The majority of the studied subjects have got satisfactory knowledge and practices. A positive correlation was found between nurses’ total knowledge and practices as regards port-a-cath care. Moreover, significant positive correlation was found between nurses’ total knowledge, practices and their demographic characteristics as regards age, experience in nursing field and port-a-cath care previous training and educational level except gender. Conclusion: The majority of the studied nurses had satisfactory knowledge and practice related to port-a-cath care. Moreover, positive correlations were found between nurses’ total knowledge and practices as well as their demographic characteristics. Recommendation: Conduction of continuing educational programs regarding prevention and control measures for the nurses to prevent and handle port-a-cath complications
