Abstract

Macromorphological, micromorphological studies and DNA fingerprinting of Reichardia tingitana L. roth were conducted. Phytochemical screening of aerial parts and flowers revealed the presence of volatile oils, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins, lactones, sterols and triterpenes. Study of the essential oils of both aerial parts and flowers and identification of their constituents by GC/ MS. Extraction and fractionation of aerial parts and flowers and TLC investigation of extracts. Study of the lipoidal matter, GC/MS analysis of unsaponifiable matter and fatty acids methyl esters, isolation and identification of two sesquiterpene lactones. Study of the chloroformic extract of the aerial parts, isolation and identification of two compounds. Study of the polyphenolic content, quantitative estimation of the total polyphenols, quantitative estimation of the total flavonoids and detection of the free radical scavenging activity, isolation and identification of two phenolic acids and eight flavonoidal compounds. Reichardia tingitana L. roth was found to be rich in vitamins, minerals and protein. All toxic heavy metals were below the international limits and considered a safe edible plant. Tissue culture and induction of callus cultures. LD₅₀ was found to be safe up to 5g/kg for all tested alcoholic and aqueous extracts. Alcoholic and aqueous extracts exerted anti-hyperglycemic activity. All extracts exerted anti-oxidant activity and restored the blood glutathione level in diabetic rats
