Abstract

This Study aims to investigate the effect of health insurance on the health of adults (20+) and to identify the main factors affecting it. Health is measured using a morbidity measure: the presence of any health problems during the year preceding the survey. To achieve the objectives of the study, we first use descriptive analysis technique to identify the level of health insurance coverage among adults and its gender and socioeconomic differentials and to investigate the health status and the health seeking behavior of both the insured and uninsured adults. Secondly, we use random effects logistic regression models to identify the main factors (including health insurance) affecting the likelihoods of reporting any health problems. Basically, this study depends on the social contract survey (SCS) which was conducted by the Information and decision support center (IDSC) in 2005. This survey covers various aspects related to the economic, health, social, and political environment in Egypt. One of the main findings of the study is that health insurance is considered as one of the main factors that affect the likelihood of reporting any health problems among males and females and that the insured are less likely to report illness than their uninsured counterparts
