Abstract

Hemiparesis is associated with an impaired gait due to the inability of the patient to control the affected lower limb. To correct this problem, this study aimed at designing, implementing and testing a wearable functional electric stimulation device that incorpo-rated a mixed frequency pulse train to stimulate knee flexor and/or ankle dorsiflexor mus-cles in patients with hemiparesis. Motion sensors were placed on the shank continuously to monitor joint angles. The device used transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) current. As skeletal muscles are non-linear and time-varying physiological and biomechanical systems, feedback control was achieved using Proportional Integral Deriv-ative (PID) controller performance to monitor joint angle. Initial results from three pa-tients showed an improvement in knee flexion angle during walking that ranged between 86 to 193% of original values without the use of the device
