Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate social and mass media impact on self-esteem and body image of female nursing students. Setting: the present study was conducted at the faculty of nursing {u2013} Cairo University. Convenient sample consisted of five hundreds and nine of female students who participated in the study. Descriptive correlational design was used. Three different questionnaires including demographic data, self-esteem scale, and body image scale. The current study results revealed that, the majority of female nursing students used Facebook, and about half of them watched fashion on television. There were highly statistically significant differences among media usage, body image and self {u2013}esteem. It also revealed that, there is a positive significant correlation between self-esteem and body image for female nursing students. The current study concluded that, the female nursing student had high level of self-esteem and negative body image. The majority of nursing female students spent 1 {u2013} 5 hours daily watched Facebook. Social and mass media had an impact on self-esteem and body image of female nursing students. This study recommended that, intervention programs should be held that help the female students to adapt with their altered body image and self-esteem and initiate a system for raising level of awareness of teens of the different possibilities of risks of long use of social media, through online awareness campaigns
