Abstract

It is widely agreed that education is critical for faster economic growth. Some youth have the chance to continue on in education while the others do not. Recent concern with inequality of opportunity in education has resulted in a number of reports and recommendations for national policy. This study employed the sequential logit model in measuring the inequality of educational opportunities in Egypt by studying the effect of the family socioeconomic status (SES) on the probability of passing from one educational level to another (i.e. inequality of education opportunity (IEOpp)) and its effect on the highest achieved level of education (i.e. inequality of education outcome (IEOut)) and the relation between them. The Egyptian Labor Market Panel Surveys (ELMPS 2012) is used in this study. The results show that gender gap decreased over time but still exists. Individuals who were born in rural Upper Egypt still have lower chances to enroll to primary schools and by extension to university. Higher levels of father and mother{u2019}s education promote individuals{u2019} chances to get more education. As the effect of unobserved variables (like individual{u2019}s effort, luck, motivation{u2026}etc.) increases the effect of socioeconomic variables decreases over time and over transitions
