Abstract

Objective: The role of EBV in breast cancer pathogenesis is still conflicting, this role was tested in Nile Delta by detecting the percentage of EBV prevalence and viral load in the female breast cancer samples. Methods: This study involved 60 breast carcinoma female patient samples. All samples were subjected to; First: histopathological markers , detection for tumor grade, tumor type (ductal or lobular), nodal status and tumor receptors (ER, PR, and Her2) using immunohistochemistry. Second: EBV DNA extraction, purification, and quantitation by real-time PCR. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 17 program was used for performing results statistics. Results: Results were plotted in two tables, one for EBV detection and other for EBV viral load, and compared with the following clinicopathological markers: age, tumor size, tumor grade, tumor stage, tumor type (ductal or lobular), tumor nodal status and tumor receptors (ER, PR, and Her2). It was found that the prevalence ratio of EBV in breast cancer specimens was varied for each clinicopathological marker from 12.5% to 20.4% in all tested samples. A significant association was found in EBV prevalence with lymph node positive samples (P= 0.048) and a significant positive correlation of EBV viral load with old aged patients was found too (P = 0.035)
