Abstract

There are two major classes of lung cancer, small cell carcinoma and non-small cell lung carcinoma. The non-small cell carcinoma is further subdivided into subtypes of which the main categories are adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma. Treatments include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy with varying degree of success. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a trans-membrane glycoprotein with an extra cellular epidermal growth factor binding domain and an intracellular tyrosine kinase domain that regulates signaling pathways to control cellular proliferation. The EGFR gene is located on chromosome 7p11.2 and is formed of 28 exons. The gene encodes a 170 kDa receptor tyrosine kinase formed 464aa.
