Abstract

Most patients with breast cancer are receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy prior to surgery for the benefits of reducing tumor volume, treatment of early metastatic disease and allow breast-conservation surgery. So, assessment of early tumor response to NAC allows the oncologist to customize the preoperative chemotherapy to achieve the maximum response for every patient.
Also, early detection of treatment failure is important to permit the oncologist to tailor and adjacent the treatment to prevent unnecessary treatment and side effect as well as allow them to adject the treatment for more effective regiment.
Usually, the patients were undergoing mammography and ultrasonography for primary diagnosis. These methods along with physical examination are proved to be suboptimal in assessment of response to NAC accurately.
Breast MRI has been used as diagnostic tool along with mammography and ultrasound for the staging of disease extent prior to treatment as well as the response to NAC by tracking small changes in tumor size and microenvironment.
