Abstract

Since the initial outbreak in December of 2019, SARS-CoV-2 infection and its associated COVID-19 has quickly developed into a global epidemic.
The clinical manifestations of the disease usually start after less than a week, consisting of fever, cough, nasal congestion, fatigue and other signs of upper respiratory tract infections. The infection can progress to severe disease with dyspnoea and severe chest symptoms corresponding to pneumonia.
Although COVID-19 is best known for causing fever and respiratory symptoms, it has been reported to be associated also with different extrapulmonary manifestations, including dermatological signs.
Dermatological manifestations of COVID-19 are significantly more polymorphic than any viral infection. Maculopapular, vesicular, and urticarial lesions are the most common cutaneous eruptions.
YKL-40 is produced by a spectrum of cells in response to a variety of injury and cytokine stimuli. As YKL-40 is a potent stimulator of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2, so it may has an important role in pathogensis of skin manifestations in COVID- 19 patients.
The aim of our study was to measure the level of YKL-40 in COVID-19 patients with and without skin lesions.
This study is a case- control study conducted on total number of 120 patients, include 60 covid -19 patients with skin manifestations and 60 covid 19 patients without skin manifestations beside 60 age and gender matched healthy subjects as a control group. Full history, general and dermatological examination, as well as measuring YKL-40 levels using ELISA were done for all studied cases.
