Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shock wave
therapy versus the intermittent pneumatic compression in post mastectomy
lymphedema. Methods of evaluation: Arm limb volume measurement:
V=h(C1)2+C1C2+C22/12π. Forty five women with breast cancer will be
recruited from Minia Oncology Center. Their ages were ranged from 35 to 65
years old: group A: group which received the shock wave therapy with
complex decongestive physical therapy (CDPT). group B: group which
received the intermittent pneumatic compression with complex decongestive
physical therapy (CDPT). group C:group which received only the complex
decongestive physical therapy (CDPT), including bandaging, compression
garments, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and self care, for two weeks.
Results: results showed that the Shock wave therapy with the complex
decongestive therapy and the pneumatic compression therapy with the complex
decongestive therapy, were effective in decreasing the arm segment volume
(ASV) in upper limb lymphedema postmastectomy as evidenced by the highly
significant decrease in the ASV. But the pneumatic compression therapy with
the complex decongestive therapy was more beneficial than the Shock wave
therapy with the complex decongestive therapy
