Abstract Chronic diseases or illnesses are conditions that are slow in progression, of long duration, and have no spontaneous resolution. During the past decades, an increasing predominance of chronic disorders was observed as a result of ameliorated living conditions, better prevention, management of infectious diseases, medical technological enhancements and overall aging of the population. Studies have shown that chronic health conditions are common precursors for developing disability. Furthermore, personal and environmental factors have huge impact on the experience and extent of disability and they can be either facilitators or barriers. Disability is a major health issue as more than half of the burden of premature mortality is due to overall disability. The aim of the present study was to detect and characterize physical disability in chronically ill patients admitted to the Main University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University. |
