Abstract

Aim:The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge ,attitude and practice of a group of
Egyptian dental interns toward caries risk assessment and management (CRA).
Methodology: Knowledge, attitude and practice of 81 Egyptian dental interns toward caries
risk assessment (CRA) and management were assessed through a 27-question survey,the
survey was conducted at the department of Pediatric Dentistry, Cairo university.Frequenices
and percentiles were used to evaluate personal information,knowledge,attitude and practice
toward caries risk assessment and management. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test
Results: The response rate was 93.8% (76/81). Dental interns scored high knowledge about
caries risk assessment(CRA) with the exception of caries as a transmissible disease
(52.6%),history of restorations as a result of caries in the last 3 years (51.3%) and white spot
lesion as a risk factor (68.4%).97.3% of participants believed that caries risk assessment(CRA)
should be an intergral part of dental practice.(50%) of dental interns sometimes, applied topical
fluoride as preventive measure to their patients .While fluoridated toothpaste (22.3%),diet
counseling (22.3%) and counseling for recall visits (19.7%) are less frequently recommended.
Conclusions: Younger graduates showed better knowledge, attitude and recommended more
usage of preventive measures for caries management than older graduates and also female
subjects exhibited better knowledge, attitude and practice than male subjects toward caries risk
assessment.
