Abstract

Background: The goal of most therapy procedures for children with spastic cerebral palsy is to increase their walking abilities. Locomotor training in a sensory pool has been recommended for the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy in an effort to improve walking independence and gait speed.
Purpose: To determine if gait training in a sensory pool has any influence on gait kinematics in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.
Methodology: Thirty spastic diplegic children of both sexes (13 girls and 17 boys) varying ages from 4 to 7 years were involved in this study. They were split into 2 groups: study and control. The control group got a regular therapeutic exercise routine based on the Pragmatic method, while the study group got the same routine program as the control group as well as 30 minutes of underwater gait training in specially designed sensory pool. Two-dimensional (2D) gait analysis was used to evaluate kinematic gait features before and after three months of effective therapy.
Results: The results of this study revealed statistical significant differences in spatial and temporal gait parameters (step length, step width, swing time and cadence) of study and control groups in favor of the study group.
Conclusion: In addition to the designed techniques of treatment, underwater gait training in a sensory pool could be applied to help children with spastic diplegia improve their walking patterns.
