Abstract

Background: Burn injuries are one of the most severe traumatic injuries with high rates of morbidity and mortality ‎. The aim of this study is to assess the psychological condition of severely burned patients during periods of hospitalization and follow up. Materials and Method: A longitudinal design was applied in this study that carries out at Plastic and Burn Surgery Center ‎of Mansoura University Hospitals‎. A sample of 60 patients was included in the study. Five tools were utilized in this study: self-administered structured questionnaire to assess demographic and clinical data, beck depression inventory, state-trait anxiety inventory, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) checklist and social avoidance and distress scale to assess the psychological condition of patients with severe burns. Results of this study demonstrated that the overall mean scores of depression, anxiety and PTSD were significantly higher during hospitalization period than they were during follow-up period. For social anxiety, the overall mean score during follow-up was higher than during hospitalization. The differences between the two times of assessment were highly statistically significant for all variables.. A significant positive correlation was found between depression, anxiety, PTSD, and social anxiety and each other. Conclusion: Based on findings of the present study, it can be concluded that severe burns can cause significant psychological morbidities during both periods of hospitalization and follow- up with higher prevalence and severity of depression, anxiety and PTSD during hospitalization and high prevalence and severity of social anxiety during follow up after discharge.. Recommendations: Psychological health training programs should be developed to educate burn team members including burn nurse and psychiatric nurse on the short and long term psychological consequences of burns, along with effective ways for improving psychological health.
