Abstract

Oral cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, with squamous cell carcinomas being the most common type, accounting for 90% of all oral cancers. High recurrence rate of OSCC has been found in many cases. Thus, the development of new methods to predict the prognosis of OSCC is essential
Aim: To investigate the expression profile of miR-34c in normal oral mucosal tissues and different grades of OSCC using RT-qPCR and to evaluate and quantify CD68 antibody
(a marker for staining TAMs) in normal tissue and OSCC using immunohistochemistry
Methodology: Cases of oral squamous cell carcinomas were retrieved from archival
blocks between 2016 to 2021, from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Faculty of dentistry.
Results: Expression levels of miR-34c were significantly lower in different grades of OSCC compared to normal oral mucosal tissues and Moderate-Poorly differentiated OSCC was not associated with the lowest expression of miR-34c.CD68+ Macrophages in each group of OSCC were found to be significantly higher compared to the control
group.
Conclusions: Our finding suggests the role of miR-34c as a tumor suppressor gene in OSCC.
High infiltrations of TAMs were observed in moderate and well differentiated OSCC
specimens around the neoplastic and malignant epithelial islands and cells.
